Thurs 09:00 – 09:45 Naso-oesophageal feeding tubes - placement and securing techniques with Gina Parkes Gina Parkes DipAVN (S.A.), PgDip(Vet Ed), FHEA, RVN Gina qualified as a veterinary nurse in Northern Ireland in 2008 and then gained her Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing in small animals, before joining the RVC’s Queen Mother Hospital for Animals in 2011 as the Senior Medicine Nurse. Gina won the BSAVA nurse abstract award in 2015 for complications associated with intravenous catheter placement, before becoming the Head Medicine Nurse at the hospital in 2016. In 2019 Gina gained a PgCert in Veterinary Education and in July completed her post graduate diploma. She joined the RVC VN school as a educator in medical nursing and currently teaches the CertAVN in Medical nursing as a teaching fellow. Gina currently leads a team of 24 medicine nurses and has a special interest in endocrine nursing and infectious disease cases.

Thurs 10:00 – 10:45 Hands On Bone Plating and TPLO Live Session with Dr Rory Paton Dr Rory Paton BVSc CertAVP MRCVS Veterinary Surgeon Rory’s business developed as a result of observing a need in the veterinary world for mobile vets who could perform advanced procedures thus bridging the gap between those offered by veterinary practices and referral centres. Essentially, VetSOS customers are vets. VetSOS helps practices expand the services they can offer their patients on a local basis. In order to further aid his mobile surgery business, Rory has also commissioned a piece of multiplatform orthopaedic planning software – called ‘vPOP pro’ which is now used by surgeons in 45 universities and 50 countries around the world to teach and plan veterinary orthopaedic procedures.

Thurs 11:00 – 11:45 Advanced Venous access – long stay catheter placement options, including central venous catheter placement with Lisa Angell Lisa Angell VTS(Anaesthesia/Analgesia) PgCert(VetEd) FHEA RVN Lisa joined the Royal Veterinary College's, Queen Mother Hospital for Animals as a dedicated anaesthesia nurse in February 2010. Previous to this, Lisa spent 7 years in a busy primary care practice. In 2013, Lisa was promoted to Head Anaesthesia Nurse and now leads a team of anaesthesia nurses and patient care assistants. In 2012 Lisa became board certified as a Veterinary Technician Specialist in Anaesthesia and Analgesia, and in 2020 Lisa studied for, and graduated with a Post Graduate certificate in Veterinary Education and became a member of the FHEA. Lisa has lectured on many anaesthesia topics both nationally and internationally, as well as authoring articles and has recently contributed two chapters in an anaesthesia nursing text book. Lisa has a keen interest in pain management and is passionate about promoting and inspiring nurses to learn new skills and start performing local anaesthetic techniques.

Thurs 12:00 – 12:45 Electrosurgery: Vessel Sealing and Diathermy in Everyday General Practice with Dr Rob White Dr Rob White BSc (Hons) BVetMed DSc CertVA DSAS (Soft Tissue) DipECVS SFHEA FRCVS Rob is Professor of Small Animal Surgery at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, University of Nottingham. Rob has spent his career practicing and teaching in the field of small animal soft tissue surgery, having worked in academia, private practice and industry. He is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons and holds the RCVS Diploma in Small Animal Surgery (Soft Tissue). More recently, in 2020, he was awarded the Higher Doctorate of Science from the University of Nottingham for his research into congenital portosystemic shunts – the main area of his clinical interest throughout his career.

After an internship and residency at the Animal Heath Trust, in 2003 Freddie became Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia and, more recently, became Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for meritorious contributions to clinical practice. Freddie worked as clinical Anaesthetist at the Animal Health Trust, Lecturer at Padua School of Veterinary Medicine, Clinical Research Fellow at the University of Cambridge Division of Anaesthesia, based at Addnebrookes Hospital, then moved to Dick White Referrals, where Freddie led the anaesthesia team until January 2023 and run a successful residency training programme based at DWR and Newmarket Equine Hospital. Freddie have recently founded, with some colleagues, Granta Veterinary Specialists, an independent veterinary referral. Freddie has been a board member and President of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and analgesia and holds a part time position as Professor of Practice with Nottingham University. Freddie has co-authored more than 40 publications (H index 22), and spoken at national and international courses and congresses.

She holds additional certificates in anaesthesia and emergency critical care (ECC). Currently, Lou is the Clinical Lead RVN at a busy primary care practice in Buckinghamshire and also educates veterinary teams about Quality Improvement for RCVS Knowledge. Recognised for her contributions, she received the RCVS Inspiration Award in 2019 and is a two-time RCVS Knowledge Champion for her clinical audits that improved patient outcomes in anaesthesia and postoperative care. Thurs 16:45 – 17:15 A guide to biofilm in veterinary wounds with Sam Bell RVN Sam Bell BSc (Hons) DipAVN DipHECVN RVN Head Nurse of Medical & Surgical Referrals, Rowe Referrals, Bristol Sam graduated in 2008 with a BSc(Hons) in Veterinary Nursing Science from Hartpury College. Due to her passion for advanced nursing, she embarked on the Higher Education in Clinical Veterinary Nursing and RCVS Advanced Diploma in Veterinary Nursing. Sam's interests lie in surgical nursing, diagnostic imaging and wound management. Sam provides CPD lectures for veterinary nurses and vets for IVC nursing programmes, national congresses and independent CPD. She currently sits on the editorial board for the international peer-reviewed journal The Veterinary Nurse and regularly contributes journal articles to the journal. Sam was the revision author for the surgical nursing chapter in Aspinall's Compete Textbook of Veterinary Nursing in 2016. In her spare time Sam spends time with her horse Charlie, has a rescue cat called Toby and is a keen marathon runner and ultra marathoner.

Donna now works for “The Vet Consultancy” as a Performance Coach and Business Consultant alongside Gill Burkhill and Nicki Daw.
